Borage – Borago officinalis

Borage is an annual herb with pretty little vivid blue star shaped flowers and hairy grey/green leaves which can be added to salads and taste like cool cucumber; the pretty flowers can be frozen in an ice cube to add a splash of luxuriousness to a Pimms or just used to dress up a salad.

Borage is loved by bees as its flowers are so nectar rich and this makes it an excellent companion plant as it draws insects to it & the surrounding crops good next to tomatoes as helps with fertilisation!

It does self-seed very easily which in this case could be seen as an advantage but just deadhead to remove flowers before they set seed if you don’t want a carpet of Borage.

Chop Suey Greens – Chrysanthemum coronarium

These super-fast-growing edible oriental leafy greens go from seed to plate in 6 weeks. Ideal for shady spots. Tastes like: Broccoli, Samphire and the smell of chrysanthemum. You might be far more likely to find these seeds in the flower section than alongside trendy oriental veg like pak choi and bean sprouts, however the leaves of this pretty Chrysanthemum are easily the most delicious traditional Asian green that can be grown in the UK. With super fast growing leafy greens and aromatic, sunny yellow flowers, there is so much more to this plant than just a pretty window box decoration.

Cucamelon – Melothria scabra

Also known as the Mexican Sour Gherkin, cucamelons produce vines that could be mistaken for regular cucumber plants. The plants are productive as cucumbers, the fruits are amazingly cute and novel. They look like tiny watermelons, but have a very appealing cucumber flavour with a slight citrus twist. Eat them fresh or pickle them for a crunchy treat. Harvest them at the 2cm (1″) size, before the seeds develops. Start the seeds indoors and treat as you would a conventional cucumber seedling.

Quinoa – Chenopodium quinoa

This trendy new ‘super-food’ is the sacred grain of the Incas. It’ll grow easily even in sunny Scotland. Tastes like couscous, nutty & slightly hop-like. Just 10 plants produce up to 0.5kg (1lb) of grain! Unlike wheat, oats or barley, quinoa’s ultra high yielding habit makes it one of only two grains (along with maize) that you don’t need acres of land to produce a worthwhile harvest on – offering up to an astonishing pound of grain from just 10 plants!

Wild White Strawberry – Fragaria vesca

One of the easiest of all fruit crops to grow, these nouvelle-cuisine sized strawberries incredibly pack all the flavour of a ripe pineapple into a fruit the size of a raisin. Their unusual cream colour does not only give them a fun visual appeal, but means they are virtually invisible to marauding birds – meaning there is all the more for you!
