Grow Your Own Sweetcorn, Runner Beans & Squash

The technique of growing Corn, Beans, and Squash together in an arrangement called the Three Sisters is the ultimate in companion planting and helps increase harvests, naturally dating back to the ancient native Americans

Sweetcorn acts as a support for the runner beans, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil for the high feeding requirements of sweetcorn and squash, and the squash provides mulch and root protection for the sweetcorn and runner beans! After cooperating beautifully in the garden, sweetcorn and runner beans form a complete protein when eaten together! How’s that for a mutually beneficial relationship?

There’s nothing more satisfying than growing and picking your own vegetables at home, at the same time  trying methods of growing. With my grow your own 3 Sisters starter kit, this has never been easier. Suitable for rural or urban gardens, requiring limited space, this grow your own kit has the highest quality products to allow for the best start. All material is bio-degradable or recyclable and is sourced from within the UK, with the seed coming from UK-DEFRA registered seed merchants.

The Three Sisters are all easy to direct sow in the garden and are a great project for children to get involved in, teaching them about the beauty of natural harmony while providing a fast-growing reward for their efforts.

Each kit can contains all the materials needed to get started, 3 packets of seed, see variety list below, 8 peat free pots, 8 peat free pellets, 8 labels, 500mls peat free compost, 1 dibber and easy to follow growing instructions.

Sweetcorn – Tasty Gold F1 – very much lives up to its name as the 21cm long cobs are filled right up to the tip with golden kernels of super sweet flavour. This is a super sweet type  so it will need much more moisture to ensure a successful germination and matures from early September onwards. Sweet corn is delicious when boiled and is equally as delicious if cooked on a barbeque in the summer months.

Runner Bean – Scarlet Emperor – Heavy crops of smooth textured, dark-green pods, each reaching 30-37cm (12-15″) in length. Red flowered Runner Bean ‘Scarlet Emperor’ is excellent for freezing and for exhibition. Runner beans are a good source of Vitamin C, folate and iron, and have a high fibre content.

Squash – Pumpkin – Jack Of All Trades – Heavy crops of smooth textured, dark-green pods, each reaching 30-37cm (12-15″) in length. Red flowered Runner Bean ‘Scarlet Emperor’ is excellent for freezing and for exhibition. Runner beans are a good source of Vitamin C, folate and iron, and have a high fibre content.
